February Jinx

The current 30 year average February temperature is 14.1 degrees.  Last month was the 6th straight year that Fargo Moorhead recorded an average temperature below that mark.  It was back in 2005 that this area last experienced a warmer than normal February.  Last month?s average was 11.2 degrees, which is 2.9 degrees below that current mean.

The past six Februaries have been so cold that even though last month was noticeably colder than average, it was still the 2nd warmest February since 2005.   Previously in this space I wrote that our just completed climatological winter was our 4th straight with below normal temperatures. Our recent Februaries have been a major factor in keeping our recent winters cold.

February 2011 finished with just 0.14 inches of liquid in the 7.8 inches of snow that fell.  Although the snow amount was average for the month, the liquid precipitation was low enough to make last month the 9th driest on record.

  1. I do not believe Grand Forks had any measureable precip. during February. Where does that stand in the record books?

  2. The 0.04″ that fell at KGFK (airport) made it the 2nd driest since 1941 when records started there. The 0.06″ in town at the National Weather Service office (old UND records), must be in the top 10 or probably Top 5, but I don’t have those records handy to look to be sure. But it was dry month for almost all of ND and northern Minnesota. We could only hope to get that lucky in March.
