Where Is 80°?

The average first 80 degree day of the season occurs on May 6 in Fargo Moorhead.  The warmest official temperature locally was a 74 degree reading back on May 10.  Although the temperatures the past few days have been pleasant, they have been well shy of 80 degrees and at this point it seems unlikely we will be recording an 80 degree high until at least next week.

My strong suspicion is we will hit 80 degrees before the end of the month, but if by chance we do not it certainly would not be the first time the residents of Fargo Moorhead waited until June to reach that milestone.  There have been 9 years with such an occurrence with the latest being in 1983.

More recently the first 80 did not occur until May 23, 2006.  You may remember that 2006 was both one of the warmest and driest summers on record, yet another reminder that a slow start to our warm season does not necessarily mean the summer will disappoint.

April and May of 2006 was generally average to warm and pleasant, even if the first 80 did not occur till almost Memorial Day weekend. Take a look at the string of high temps in the 60s and 70s in mid-late April (including Easter Sunday). The first 80 of 2009 (in Grand Forks anyway) was May 29, and that summer proved to be very cool.
