The month of May finished with an average temperature of 60.8 degrees. This just missed out on being ranked in the top ten on record. In the end, May 2012 ranked as the 11th warmest since 1881.
The warmest day last month was a 96 degree high on May 18 which was the warmest temperature in the month since 2006 and that 96 degree reading ranked as tied as the 6th warmest high during the month of May on record. The 35 degree low last Wednesday was the coolest temperature of the month. It was only the 16th May on record without a freezing temperature being recorded.
May was a dry month until May 27 when 1 to 2.5 inches of rain fell over Fargo Moorhead. Although the area near the airport had the least amount of rain that day, the sensor failed (NDSU had just 1 inch), so for now the official reading that day is 2.33 inches that fell at the coop observers location in north Moorhead which brought the monthly total to 3.03 inches which is right near the average of 2.81 inches.
