The Summer Of 2012

The summer of 2012 finished as the 4th warmest on record.  The only three summers with a higher average were 1988, 1936 and 1933 in that order.  The average temperature for June, July and August was 71.8 degrees which is 3.0 degrees above the current 30 year average of 68.8 degrees.

As a comparison, the cool summer of 2009 finished with an average temperature of 65.3 degrees.  Not including other months, the three months of summer recorded 20 days with a high at or above 90 degrees, the12th highest total since 1881. That was far short of the 35 recorded in 1936 or the 34 recorded in 1988.  Yet, this past summer was consistently in the 80s more frequently than other years with more 90 degrees days to end up ranked as the 4th warmest.

Rainfall ended at 6.30 inches which made the period from June 1 through August 31 the 25th driest such period on record.

Other odd stats for June through August include:

Average High: 84.5 degrees for the 6th highest on record

Average Low: 59.1 degrees for the 11th warmest on record

90 degree days (June through August only) 20 for the 12th highest since 1881.
