Stuck On Paper Maps

Before I could read books, I was reading service station highway maps and even knew my way around the Rand McNally Road Atlas.

Sadly, these maps are going the way of the vinyl record album and the dinosaur.  Paper maps are fading fast due to the advent and popularity of smart phone maps, which allow you to zoom in and even offer your choice of satellite or street-level views.  The internet world of today also allows access to web sites that give you directions and even services that tell you to “take this next right.”

The problem for me is that all this is diminishing the value of a skill at which I am something of a master.  I am personally diminished to have someone or something tell me how to get somewhere.  And although I love the features offered on Google maps, I tend to lose perspective when I zoom in and out causing me to… gulp… get a little lost.

I guess this means I’m now old enough to start finding fault with some of the new stuff.
